In an effort to reduce motorcycle accidents in Lumbadzi, the Malawi Police Service's Traffic Department, in collaboration with the Road Safety Alert Foundation (ROSAF) and the Kabanza Association of Malawi (KAMA), has launched road safety awareness campaigns across several trading centers.
The initiative, which covers Lumbadzi, Nkhamenya, Mponela, Chimwaza Market, and Dowa Turn-Off, aims to ensure accident-free festivities.
Superintendent Masautso Lufesi Marion from the National Police Headquarters Traffic Department emphasized the commitment of law enforcement to maintaining road safety throughout the year.
"We are dedicated to conducting regular traffic checks to ensure the safety of all road users, not just during the festive season but continuously," said Marion during the Lumbadzi campaign.
The awareness drive placed special focus on motorcycle and bicycle operators, who are often involved in road accidents.
Noel Mhango, Operations Manager at ROSAF, urged pedestrians and business operators to adhere to road safety measures, including avoiding the placement of merchandise along roadways to minimize risks.
Joseph Petro, Chairperson of KAMA, expressed concern over the increasing fatalities among Kabanza operators and encouraged adherence to road safety regulations.
He announced the upcoming Kabanza Safety Training and Licensing Program, scheduled to begin on January 10, 2025, which will provide affordable motorcycle licenses and registration services.
Motorcycle operators were reminded to register their bikes, obtain insurance, and acquire valid riding licenses.
Mphatso Sendeza, Chairperson of the Lumbadzi Kabanza rank, praised the campaign, describing it as timely during a period when accidents are more likely to occur.
The initiative highlights the collaborative effort between stakeholders to promote road safety and reduce fatalities, particularly during the holiday season.
