Knock It Music Group, representing artist ProVoice, has expressed outrage over the meager royalties paid to the singer for his hit song "Tunduma".
Despite being one of the most popular songs in Malawi between 2021 and 2022, ProVoice received only 6,000 Malawi Kwacha from the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation and nothing from private radio stations.
In an open letter to the Copyright Society of Malawi (COSOMA), Knock It Music Group called the situation a "grave injustice" and demanded an investigation into the matter.
The group argued that the current royalty distribution system is flawed and needs urgent reform to ensure fair compensation for local musicians.
ProVoice's song "Tunduma" was a cultural phenomenon, receiving extensive airplay on public and private radio stations.
The group believes that the song's success warrants significantly higher royalty earnings for the artist.
Knock It Music Group urged COSOMA to take immediate action to rectify the situation, engage with stakeholders, and implement measures to guarantee fair and transparent royalty payments to all artists.
The group warned that allowing such a high-profile song like "Tunduma" to be undervalued sets a dangerous precedent that threatens to discourage and demoralize Malawian musicians.
They look forward to COSOMA's prompt response and resolution of the matter.
